Hey all!  Well, it’s been awhile… sorry about that.  Hopefully all will be forgiven when I share what I’ve been up to :)

Moving! I got my own little studio in Leucadia with lots of funk and mexican-style charm.  Here’s a look at the space I’ve got to work with:

Yosemite

Vernal Falls1

Hi all! You may or may not have noticed that I haven’t posted in a little while, well I went on a vacation to one of the most beautiful places this time of year — Yosemite National Park :)  The waterfalls were in full-swing and we didn’t miss a single one!  I think we hiked about 20 miles in two days, and even through some snow!!  We got rain, sun, and really chilly and the scenery never got old…

DIY Earring Display

display

Jewelry is pretty. That’s why we wear it. So why keep it closed away in a jewelry box? Jewelry should be treated as art, and displayed!

This is my quick little DIY for making your own jewelry display :)

Supplies:

  • Frame (I found mine for $1 at a thrift store)
  • Lace table runner
  • Super Glue
  • Scissors

1. Cut your table runner to fit your frame top to bottom. Don’t worry if the lace doesn’t fit perfectly in your frame – mine didn’t, you can always pull it from the sides with some thread.

2. Apply dots of super glue to the frame then attach the lace, pulling just a little bit so that it’s taut. Shazam! You’re done! Now for the fun part – hanging all your pretty earrings!

Catchin’ Dreams

Dreamcatcher

A while back, I randomly decided that I wanted to make a huge dreamcatcher. I’ve always loved the way they look, and I figured that mine would be a more modern interpretation. I have a lot of jewelry and things that I never wear or use, but really love. I wanted to incorporate all of these things into my ‘sea inspired’ dreamcatcher.

I used a 12″ embroidery hoop, a lace doily, found beach glass, shells, sand dollars, beads, feathers, and little gemstones & crystals. It’ll probably always be a work in progress, as I’ve already added more to  it. I’m loving it & my dreams are already sweeter! ;)

3 Things

IMG_20130213_124838{Cupcakes for Two, recipe here. Because sometimes you just want a cupcake.. or two}

Whew! These past couple of weeks have been busy ones for me. I finally finished every one of my furniture projects (!!! I’ll share more on that later ;))  I spent a little much-needed QT with my parents last week, (yay!) where we (my boyfriend, cousin & I) were treated to an amazing dinner at my new favorite restaurant here in Encinitas, Solace. I tried raw oysters for the first time….! I’m still not sure how I feel about them… they may be an acquired taste.. ;) I’m also super excited about my recent employment opportunity! – I started a new weekend job at the place I interned in Solana Beach, Bixby&Ball. This place is filled with wonderful ladies, wonderful home decor, and wonderful energy! :) I’m so happy to be back! In the mean time, here are 3 (other) things currently making me happy ;)

IMG_20130220_111301{The cutest matchbox + matches ever. Isn’t that saying the truth?}

Ps- for some reason the word ‘boyfriend’ really bothers me.. :/ it sounds so juvenile! Maybe I’m just cray-cray.. I don’t know am I alone on this?? Anyway, here’s to a great week ahead!

Antiquing

IMG_20130123_125750

{Love everything about this booth: chrome, mirrors, gold + black + white, textures, prints…..}

One of my favorite things to do when I’ve got some free time is to browse through big antique stores. This one is on Cedros in the Design District in Solana Beach. They have a huge space with tons of booths from different vendors. You’ll find everything from native american relics to shabby chic decor. And don’t even get me started on their jewelry selection…

IMG_20130123_123031

{One of my favorite things about antique stores is the amount and variety of ART}

IMG_20130123_124757{Wishing I had an extra $500 hangin’ around for this blue + gold rug}

IMG_20130123_124045

{I love ‘pretty’ kids toys.. they’re the kind that you’d rather not hide away in a toy box ;) these handmade horses were adorable}

I love hunting around for one-of-a-kind pieces. I have a feeling it’s going to be my favorite part of the design process as I grow as a designer. However, it proves to be dangerous shopping for others as I always find something I want for myself! ;)

A Well-Traveled Dresser

IMG_20130102_154313

After much deliberation about which direction to go with my dresser, I finally settled on the perfect re-do. I simply couldn’t decide on a color to paint the dresser, or even a variety of colors… It felt like too much of a commitment. I thought about just staining the whole thing, but without any hardware it would just be too plain.  I’ve always loved the look of maps, and so I decided to Mod Podge vintage maps to the face of my drawers.

I could not be happier with the result! The project in total only cost me about $30.

Here’s how I did it:

  1. I started by sanding down the whole dresser
  2. Then I applied a couple of coats of dark stain – Minwax in Mahogany – to the top and sides (I left the drawers unstained since I knew I’d be covering them later)
  3. I used five different vintage maps all from places I’d like to go ;) I measured the drawers and cut the maps to size
  4. Then I applied a layer of Mod Podge to the face of the drawers and stuck down the map
  5. I cut the maps a little big so I would have a some wiggle room, so after I stuck them down, I trimmed the excess
  6. Then came the final layer of Mod Podge and viola! A dresser transformation :)

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 8,900 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 15 years to get that many views.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Design Obsession: Chairs

Merry Christmas Eve readers! I’m excited about a few things…. family, presents, delicious food… and a GUEST BLOGGER here on bfarhardesign! Here’s Mari:

Hi, all! I’m Mari and I write for Arcadian Home blog, a great place to find lovely home decor inspirations. I’m so excited to be visiting here at bfarhardesign today to share a guest post and a design obsession with you. I love chairs in every shape, size and color. My capacity to give just one more chair a safe and loving home knows no bounds. No matter a chair’s age or condition, I always see the potential in it–what a fine piece of furniture it could become if given the opportunity.

I’ve pulled together eight images that include some of my favorite chairs. It was extremely difficult to choose so few, but here are my final choices for your consideration. We would love to learn about the chairs you’ve known and loved, if you would care to leave a comment. Thanks for letting me share. Enjoy!

Chair Obsession

Three gorgeous high-back white armchairs are able to maintain their cool even in the presence of this awesome china wall gallery.

Chair Obsession

Massive wall art is no competition for a chic beauty in wide stripes of cream and gray. I love the pale wood trim and legs on this chair.

Chair Obsession

How gorgeous is this Ikat-covered slipper chair? With their armless design these little chairs can fit in corners where others will not go.

Chair Obsession

I’m totally in love with the Cappellini Knotted Chair created by Marcel Wanders. The designer’s website describes how this cool chair is created, “This lightweight chair combines industrial techniques and handcrafting. A thread constructed of aramid and carbon fibers, is knotted into the shape of a chair and then impregnated with epoxy resin and hung in a frame to dry, leaving the final form in the hands of gravity.”

Chair Obsession

As the years go by, the iconic Egg chair seems to only grow in popularity. As for me, if I had the space, I would love one in each of its lovely colors.

Chair Obsession

Aged leather chairs are irresistible. This one with its unusual button tufting is especially appealing. And look at the vintage company it keeps – antique wall map, vintage suitcase and an amazing light fixture that merges ornate and industrial elements.

Chair Obsession

Two handsome swan chairs are a stunning addition to this contemporary space. Yes, I’ll take the stylish pair, please.

Chair Obsession

In their old age, these well-loved arm chairs have found a warm and cozy home in which to rest. It seems fitting that these beauties are able to bask in the glow of that lovely chandelier.
